Waking the next morning, I am confused as to where I am. Turning, I see Roger’s sleeping form and smile. Although my heart hurts right now, I know I will be ok. Leaving Roger, I go in search of coffee and find some giant blueberry muffins in the pantry. Helping my self to both, I sit out on the back deck, looking at the mess left over from last night.

“You know, my mom will beat you for eating her muffins.”

Roger sits beside me, stretching out his long legs and resting his hands behind his head. His eyes are closed and he is facing the sun.

“You know she loves me,” I retort, pinching his side. “You and Bailey are like two dogs, facing the sun and the wind. Both weirdoes.” I laugh at him. Roger just smiles, keeping his eyes closed.

“So you want to tell me why you faked a sickness lastnight?”

“No, not really.” Roger turns to look at me, watching me with his intense brown eyes.

“Well, you think about it while I make myself a coffee. Then we’ll talk.”

I watch him leave without answering. How am I going to tell him what I saw? I know for sure he will beg me to stop seeing Ben, and I also know he will drag Bailey in on the foray. Then I will have both my friends harping on at me. All I want is to be loved, is that so hard a task?

Roger returns, making me feel a little better. I have never looked at him in a sexual way before. His puppy dog brown eyes drive all the girls wild—his long legs and sandy brown hair just fit the package. He is not well built, but he could be if he hit the gym.

“Why are you gawking at me?”

Laughing, I shrug my shoulders at him while he frowns. “Summer, about last night.” He sighs, then rubs his hands over his face. “I shouldn’t have done that, but I don’t regret it. I have wanted to tell you for a long time.”

“Roger, don’t.” I don’t want him to tell me that he loves me. I don’t want to allow myself to feel this way for him. This is getting too complicated. He is one of my best friends. Falling for your friend always, always leads to heartbreak and a ruined friendship.

“I need to clean up before my folks get home.” Standing, Roger slips on his old leather flip flops and grabs a trash bag from the compartment beneath the barbeque island. On his way by, he throws another bag and me and laughs.

“Get your ass up and help.”

We work in silence, picking up empty solo cups and beer bottles. Some of them have dubious contents, so I quickly throw them away. My eyes glance at Roger who is using a shovel to scoop up the trash. I chuckle at him, and then return to my side of the garden.

Moving closer to the hedges, my mind regurgitates the scene from last night. Ben on his knees, his face between the legs of Miss Pink Sweater.
